The history of CLSU

b.       History and Background

The University Science High School, established by virtue of the CLSU Board of Regents under the Board Resolution No. 1622 dated June 14, 1976 as a prime school for students who are inclined to pursue science and technology courses which the country needs for its massive and sustaining development programs. In 1978, Board Resolution No. 1780 was passed revising the curriculum and changing the name to Agricultural Science High School as an answer to the clamor for change of the traditional curricular offerings.
Further revision/enrichment of the curriculum was made in 1979 to strengthen the agricultural components and meet the needs of the students who seek admission to Agricultural Institutions of higher learning without prejudice to the original goal of preparing the youth for intensive training in science and technology. The school has opened its doors to interested applicants who qualify through screening by an entrance examination to fill up the limited slot of 80 in the first year level since 1978.
In 1983, the school was back to its original name, the Science High School, to respond to the schools' intensive emphasis in science and technology.
Now in its more than 2 decades of existence, though a small unit in the University under the College of Education, the USHS has been an asset and will always be an asset continuously giving its share in making CLSU a bold name in the academic world where science and technology front the line in its educational thrusts by producing quality graduates.
The school believes that education is the prime instrument of the national development and the key to excellence and global competitiveness.

h.      Personal Information
In University Science High School (USHS), there are 422 students in all grades; from grade seven until grade twelve. There are two units in this school i.e. Junior High and Senior High school. USHS is lead by their Principal, Dr. Mercedita M. Reyes. The total number of USHS school days for the S.Y. 2018-2019 is 206 and the allowed percentage of absence given for students is only 20% of it. The lessons are held for five days, from Monday to Friday, and starts at 7.30 AM to 5 PM. There are 24 professional educators in total. Some of them are also lecturers in College of Education, Central Luzon State University.
USHS adopts the said order of DepEd, regarding to the grading system, with some modifications. The basic percentage for students’ completeness across the country is 75%. However, USHS has its own policy called Retention Policy. In Retention Policy, if USHS learners pass and get 75% in their report card but do not meet 85% , they will still pass for the next level, but those students will be advised to transfer to another school – the regular one. So, all of USHS students are advised to meet minimum 80 for all of the subject in the end of the school year. That’s so challenging, right? No wonder if the number of students from Junior High School to Senior High School will experience a significant reduction.
1.1   Academic Support System
Facilities at University Science High School strongly support the development of student learning, where in learning conducted at USHS it helps students to improve themselves on the science taught. Facilities that are in school can make all teachers express freely with the application used. USHS has a fairly modern technology in supporting the development of student learning quality.
Each classroom has air conditioners, fans, projector, other rooms have LCD TV and outside the room with cctv cameras to improve school security and monitor student activities while in school. In addition the school library is very convenient and provides a very good reference book. Not only that teachers all also provided equipment such as computers, printers, internet networks and loudspeakers to facilitate and accelerate the performance of teachers in carrying out their duties.

1.2   Teaching System

The teaching system at University Science High School follows the academic calendar. The school is only active on Mondays to Fridays, Monday to Thursday students use formal uniforms. On Thursday every student uses a sport uniform and uses a smart clothes on Friday. Each teacher has a teaching time of 1 hour, school activities start from 07.00 am to 17.00 pm. Every Monday the school holds a flag ceremony. the learning process at USHS greatly gives students extraordinary output, because the teaching system available at USHS can be done in a modern way with effective methods. Teachers can use books, PowerPoint or handouts that can allow students to learn the material first before they arrive at school. 1.1  Materials and other learning sources
The learningprocess at USHS uses English but basically they still slip their mother tongue(Tagalog). To provide learning process in the classroom, teacher use course syllabus, internet (Book Online) and textbook, lecture notes/ handout, and PowerPoint presentation. In my teaching practice while at USHS, my cooperative teacher always gave a modern way of teaching but still tucked in conventional learning which was explained based on the sources of books provided at school, but broadly we use internet media as one of the things that support learning.
1.2  Measurement and Evaluation System
While at USHS I learned a lot about the teaching and learning process at the school, where the school has a system that is far different from the system applied in my country, Indonesia. Learners from Grades 1 to 12 are graded on Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter. Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter are given specific percentage weights that vary according to the nature of the learning area.
1.1   Curiculum
1780 was passed revising the curriculum and changing the name to Agricultural Science High School as an answer to the clamor for change of the traditional curricular offerings. All of the schools in Philippines use the curriculum from the government. It’s called K to 12 means education obligarry start from Kindergarten to 12th Grade. The Curriculum was implemented 4 years ago, after the former President Benigno Aquino mandated this so that the Philippine school will have the same number of years with the other South East Asian Countries. With that, the University Sciense High School used the same curriculum, two years now after its opening. This is to make sure that, students get to choose the right track for their future profession. The curriculum also would like to help those students, to make them work-ready after graduating from Senior High School.
1.2   Teaching Plan
The teaching plan at USHS requires every teacher to be able to make learning designs accompanied by learning scenarios during the teaching and learning process. Each teacher has its own planning in learning, but in general it must be in accordance with pre-existing rules such as the arrangement of learning designs that are used in general in schools in Phillipines.
This Lesson Plan is mapped and aligned to the DepEd SHS Curriculum, designed to be highly usable for teachers. It contains classroom activities and pedagogical notes, and is integrated with innovative pedagogues. All of these elements are presented in the following parts:
1.       Learning Objectives
2.       Learning Concepts
·         Key concepts
·         Learning Materials
·         References
·         Processing skills
3.       Media and Learning Resources
4.       Daily routine
·         Engage
·         Explore
·         Explain
·         Elaborate/extend
